ChromadaData – ‘King’ EP

ChromadaData is the alias of prolific Floridan beatmaker Ian Jones. This precocious 18-year-old’s work is steeped in post-Dilla haze, but Data‘s beats are much more than idol worship. Jones employs a prowess beyond his years injecting a seemingly effortless musicality into each track on his latest EP, King. Hailing from St. Augustine, Florida, Jones cut his teeth as a member of the now on hiatus Lighthouse Music. Their live shows were legendary, featuring band members trading everything from bass guitars to saxophones. Sounding like Tom Waits sitting in on a session for Frank Zappa’s Hot Rats. Thus, it should come as no surprise that Data’s latest output has strayed from the sample chopping that defined his earlier work. Jones now seems to prefer to showcase funky synthesizer riffs more than digging through crates for coveted loops. Don’t sleep on the rest of his output as there are 100 tracks up on his SoundCloud and 8 EP’s on his Bandcamp.
