Gauntlet Hair – “Righteous Black”
I’m utterly shocked and amazed by Gauntlet Hair‘s new chamber metal anthem, “Righteous Black”. Part of Adult Swim’s annual summer singles series, “Righteous Black” sees Denver’s best (personal opinion) alternative duo shedding their notably upbeat sound for something altogether darker and meaner. I mean wow, I feel like I’m listening to Jane’s Addiction while simultaneously huffing glue and trotting through thick, mucky mud…in the best way possible of course. I knew that they were reshaping their sound, but man, this bad boy far surpasses my wildest expectations.

“Righteous Black” isn’t necessarily the sound you should expect to hear on the new album but it’s a direction that we both consciously decided on. Its obviously a bit darker than our older stuff and that’s exactly what we were going for. As always, the song reflects our current moods. Not saying were suicidal over here but, you know, times are rough. We wanted to bring out more of a heaviness that you’d experience seeing us in a live setting. There’s a certain energy to our live performances and I think that’s the one aspect missing in previous recordings. If we can nail that feeling in the next album, we’ve really done something special. There’s no saying what the future holds for us, but new inspiration brought on by the move back to Chicago should prove to take our sound to new levels…(we hope). Either way, a change of scenery is always refreshing when you’re writing. We’re in the process of recording for the new album but, unlike the last, were taking our time on this one. Don’t hold your breath, its gonna be a while.
