The Austin-based, sex pop duo LAY BAC have thankfully reappeared with a brand new version of their disco-dream hit, “Kasumi (孤独)”, which was originally released as a free demo at the tail-end of summer in 2010. Since then, LAY BAC has steadily grown from a one man, experimental bedroom project to a strikingly fresh and fully energized two piece.

Last year, they released the totally danceable, heavy-hitting, SHORTCUTS EP through the excellent digital label, Zoom LensSHRILLER is their highly anticipated full-length. “Kasumi (孤独)” is the first track to officially drop from the album.

Some words from Josef Calamusa (one half of LAY BAC):

well it’s been a long time coming, but matty and i are finally on the verge of something we have been working together on for quite a while now. i’m sure you know that lay bac was orginally started by myself as a solo project, and “kasumi” is one of the first songs that i created with the intention of exploring lo-fi pop. i kinda feel that meeting matthew had something to do with destiny, because how we met was definitely a stroke of fate. i was getting fed up with making the type of music i was envisioning, so in a moment of desparation, i replied to a craigslist ad posted by an anonymous musician in Austin wanting to make music with french house, r&b, ambient pop, anco influences. moments later, he replied back, and at the time i had never met anyone from the internet IRL, so i was a bit apprehensive. i never responded back and left it at that. several months later our mutual friend (unbeknownst to me) suggested that we get together. sure enough, it was matthew (same dude from craigslist, no less). so we met up and hit it off right then and there. we started jamming together and playing joint lay bac/party girl sets in austin. i learned so much from watching him work, and without him i would never have the same passion for music as i do now. eventually, we decided that making lay bac a duo from that point onward would help us realize exactly what we needed to do. when ‘SHRILLER’ is released, you will be able to see this alliance materialize in the sounds and visuals of what lay bac has always intended to be. we are excited to say that this shared vision of having a “full-length, full of singles,” with a definite harkening to all of our major influences (notably, mj), is finally being realized soon. we wanted to express the utmost sensual vibes with this release, and we hope that it shows in the nsfw “kasumi/feel u again” videos. we even sampled some of the audio from the original video footage to accentuate the feelings that we hope to portray throughout the release. “kasumi” is essentially about being alone, and needing to have somebody right there with you. fortunately for me, i now have matthew’s brotherhood to fill that void, and a perfect collaborator for that creative flow.
