Ryan Hemsworth – “Overthinking”

The rising Canadian producer Ryan Hemsworth has certainly come a long way since I first came across his work back in the winter of 2010. At that time his music was still somewhat of a side project and his super dope (now defunct) hip-hop blog, A Half-Warmed Fish was the main focus. He’s successfully made the switch from niche blogger to buzzing producer, working closely with the breakthrough cloud rappers Main Attrakionz  and scoring consistent coverage from some of the major hip-hop focused publications such as FADER, Spin and PORTALS’ very own Live For The Funk.

His new EP, Last Words was just released through the West Coast label/collective, WEDIDIT.

Stream one of my favorite cuts from the EP, “Overthinking” below  (the Supreme Cuts remix is totally worth checking as well), and read a few words about the track from Ryan Hemsworth himself:

I’m not sure how obvious it is but this is a super rap-influenced track. Pretty much all my stuff is anyway, but I kind of approached this one like an alien who is hearing all these different rap songs and taking little pieces from them. The melody chops up Imogen Heap, who has kind of been the basic element for all things based and cloudy over the past few years. The little goofy vocal clips, the closing and opening door sounds, the jagged hi-hats, the giggles, all that stuff is just from skits and intros and outros on new and old rap mixtapes. It’s kind of like an amalgamation of essential weird rap moments – just an instance though, obviously a concept like that could take up way more than a four minute song.
