Tom Day – “First Thing”

Melbourne-based downtempo electronic producer Tom Day claims he makes tunes just for fun, but there’s a big difference between fucking around with friends and creating pieces that stun the emotional centers in our brains. Day obviously fits comfortably into the latter category. His music is typically centered around a pedestrian sample from an experience that has inspired him. For example, his ever-impressive song “Home” focuses around a sample of birds chirping, simulating the effect of morning and waking up to a new day. “First Thing”, similarly, features a recording of chatter on an airplane and a flight attendant trying to hold a clearly inattentive audience. The tune develops into something a little unnerving, something typical of even the most seasoned flyer, as minor chords and a minor string melody line take hold.
