Canyon – “Starfloss”

Chicago producer, Canyon (aka Grant Winship) sent over his debut Lost Planet EP just last night, and luckily I caught a few listens right before heading off to bed. “Starfloss” is one of the highlights on the 6-track release. Sparkling synthesizers and low-key drum sounds will slowly shift you into a post-summer, daydream daze.

From Canyon:

The winter before last I had to move away from the city temporarily and I got a laptop and started making music on it. Once I got back to Chicago I kept putting out rap beats and experimenting and after a year or so, I decided to focus on putting some kind of cohesive album together. So for most of this year I’ve been knocking that out, with this EP being the result. It was initially going to be a space odyssey concept-type album, with each song depicting a different landscape on a new planet. It ended up becoming something way different, less polished and psychedelic, more personal, emotional and nostalgic. The landscapes of the “planet” really ended up being shades of the different sounds I used to hear on the radio in my mom’s car growing up. Different wavelengths of the 90s—grunge, RnB, shit like the Cranberries—filtered in and started shaping the tunes. Some major changes in my life and relationships started leaving their mark and I added my guitar, field recordings and voice to the samples and synths. While the whole cohesive concept and fidelity kind of went out the door, it ended up becoming something much more special to me.
