Fresh Cut: KYNAN – ‘Altered Beast’
Altered Beast is the newest release from the LA-based producer/trumpet savant KYNAN and today we’ve got an exclusive fresh cut of the album, along with a few words from KYNAN (aka Joel Williams) himself. On Altered Beast, Joel re-imagines some of his best songs from the past year and adds a few new touches to make them shine even brighter than they did before.
From Joel:
I feel like I’ve always been drawn towards computers and music. When i was in middle school i’d write progressive rock epics on a midi/guitar tablature program called Guitar Pro 5. In high school it was a program called Reason. Two years ago I heard an early version of “Narcissist Anonymous” by DUDES, and was inspired to switch over to Ableton.
I remember having a bad cold at the time. I would just lay in bed on NyQuil listening to Prince and Gucci Mane. One night I watched The Carter documentary, watching Wayne just record and go at it on a daily basis grabbed my attention. For the next year I would attempt to record and release an album every month. No restrictions, just spontaneous song writing.
This album is a compilation of the tracks that I believe are standouts from the first year of material. The first half consist of new versions of songs that were released through Absent Fever. The second half consists of unreleased material from through out the year.
Altered Beast will be available tomorrow on Bandcamp & SoundCloud.
