WATER MUSIC — “RiRi”

For those of you that can remember before the murky waters of 2012, back into the last decade (!), the name NIKE7UP should ring quite a few bells. Beau of the blog scene, the genius behind the project took trashy pop songs and made them into blogxcore classics – his rework of “Rudeboy” still gets the pixellated dancefloors moving on plug.dj or wherever.

Rihanna‘s pop hits have proved fertile ground for producers to do their thing, with Star Slinger having a go at We Found Love a while back – now new wanna be buzz act WATER MUSIC has had a go, too. Promoting himself with an email containing nothing more than a PDF containing a link to his website  and SoundCloud, there’s a full EP of female fronted pop classics – disappointly entitled Sluts – that have been fed through a 56k modem and reimagined waiting at both destinations. Whilst some of the tracks don’t really hit the spot, this rework of “What’s My Name” is the cream of the crop – reminding one of those halcyon days of 2009, where the NIKE7UP SCIROPHORIA remix of “Rude Boy”  was still hot – and, crucially, is another step towards the dream of an entire DJ set worth of broken up Ri-Ri tracks.
