Finn – “Knock Knock”

The producer’s brilliant new single blends grime and R&B seamlessly.

A half-time resident of both England and San Francisco, Finn is the name of the transcendent producer behind last year’s brilliant “Keep Calling,” a track that damn-near blew up Boxed every time it dropped before Boiler Room gave it cultural weight.

Finn is now back with a four-track EP for Local Action Records, and their lead single “Knock Knock” may be even more of a show-stopper than their debut. “Knock Knock” builds on a sample of Monica and Missy Elliott’s song of the same name, speeding up the original with signature early-aughts Kanye chipmunk vibrato, stuttering drums clapping out a heaving beat beneath the bleating. In fact, Kanye is the credited producer on the original, tracing the line of influence cleanly from decade to decade. It sounds like something he would have made in 2004, given a fresh start and a solid dose of molly.

Knock Knock is out now via Local Action Records.
