PORTALswap: Joseph Stallion & Seapoint – “Made Like This”

We are proud to introduce PORTALswap, a new collaboration-based mp3 series. The ability to transcend geographical limitations has allowed artists to sculpt pieces of music together without ever having even met. PORTALswap will feature collaborations curated by PORTALS contributors as well as the remote artists’ shared experiences.

“I wanted to work with Seapoint (Rafael Bucio) ever since hearing his fuckin epic piece “OURS“. His tracks have beautiful soundscapes and subtle but intriguing structures, and something about them captures the listener right away. Dude sounds like if Burial decided to smoke one chill ass blunt and cheer up. I mean that as a total compliment. Inspired by his jams, we set about making some atmospheric noise sample soundscape bullshit immediately. Abelton synths and noise samples galore, including but not limited to: the sounds of floppy disks gliding across several different alloys of metal and the sounds you would hear only inside the signed football that sits atop the mantle in your uncle’s fine estate. I sent this along to Seapoint and he slammed beats down upon it in an avalanche of BASED MUSIC. YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES! He fruity looped to me a barrage of granulated claps, bass, hats, snaps and vocal sample synths. The lyrical process writing now began and being inspired by acapella garage band tracks my vocalist (Erin Ross) had been sending me I decide that all the vocals needed to be recorded in that program. The fine mp3 trash that garage band can kick out is usually pure gold. I guess my lyrics are half about sex and half about accepting all the terrible things in life. but you could read into them however you like.”

“The track was built upon a initial synth and bass by Max (Joseph Stallion) and on top of it I worked a beat and an extra synth, the track had a really atmospheric and evolving feel which is something I have yet to achieve in my production since I still work with more straight forward patterns and chord progressions, after the beat was polished I sent it back so that they could add vocals and finishing touches. I would say that the finished product is a balance between a dark, desolate mood and a lighter, more hopeful mood, which comes off as an interesting combination.”
