1. Wilco — “Heavy Metal Drummer”

For this most patriotic of all holidays, I’m starting the mix out with some true blue Americana. I like almost every song on ‘Yankee Hotel Foxtrot‘ better than this one, but the breeziness and nostalgia it evokes are perfect for an afternoon BBQ.

2. World’s Most — “Tall Shadows”

As a rising L.A. musician, World’s Most has brought beautiful simplicity to its natural evolution.

3. High Highs — “Open Season”

We heard this on KCRW the other day, so I started jumping up and down and clapping. Big things are coming from High Highs this fall, so put them back on your radar.

4. Old Crow Medicine Show — “Wagon Wheel”

This is hands-down my favorite song of all time. Perfect for anything really, the lyrics are partially taken from an unrecorded Bob Dylan song.

5. Giovanni James — “Shining”

An inspirational track from this fashionably multi-talented NYC artist.

6. Japandroids — “The House that Heaven Built”

I’ve listened to this track more than anything else in the past month. Inspirational rock at its best.

7. Weezer — “Surf Wax America”

In 2001 I started a worldwide phenomenon called =weezerfest=. They’re still one of my all-timey favorite bands and this is a great Weez-a-long for the heat of the Midwest mid-summer, which is where I’ll be spending my holiday weekend this year.

8. The Orwells — “Mallrats”

This incredibly young band from Chicago is a gigantic force live. Watch out for them.

9. Carly Rae Jepsen — “Call Me Maybe”

I’ve listened to this on repeat way too much this summer. If you say you don’t like this song, you’re lying.

10. Nicky da B — “Hot Potato Style”

This song never fails to make me jump and and see if I can drop it hot potato style and smile. The video for this is a must-see for the summer. This is how you mix, oh!

11. Erika Spring — “Hidden”

A beautiful offering from Erika Spring of Au Revoir Simone. The good people at Cascine have impeccable taste and will be leading the pack when the rock n’ roll revolution comes around.

12. Poolside — “Do You Believe”

I allowed my business manager to choose one song for this mix and this was his selection. We’re big fans of all things Johnny Jewel here in the Village. From the timely project name to the funky disco soul beats and faith questioning lyrics, this song works for a 4th of July mix on every level.

13. Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti — “Baby”

Winding it down with this R&B Dam Funk collab, “Baby” is all things smooth and sweet. This is way better than Justin Beiber’s version (I realize it’s not the same song. That was a joke).

14. Rhye — “Open”

One of my top songs of the year, this track brings sexytime to a whole new level.
