Mt. Royal – “Missing Reward”

Mt. Royal is a sort-of new and extremely exciting band out of Baltimore. I say sort-of because the members and voices that complete the band have been making spirited music in the Baltimore area for as long as I can remember. Before actually being named Mt. Royal they existed as “Big In Japan featuring Katrina Ford”. Katrina Ford is the distinct vocal force behind Celebration while Big In Japan features members of the long time Baltimore stand out band Lake Trout. While slices of those previous bands’ identities can be heard in Mt. Royal’s first released track, “Missing Reward”, the amalgam really takes on an entirely new movement. The start of the song, a loud wall of sound coating my mind and forcing my attention, which then cascades into a baseline like no other, complimented with an equally gripping rhythm. The synths and guitar tie it all together, while Katrina Ford’s vocals completely amaze. Ford’s performance is radiant, soul-twisting, and explodes with every build and drop. Truly one of the more unforgettable songs I’ve heard in a long time. Expect an EP in the very near future.
