Coming from a corner of the world wide web covered in pastel and unabashed digitalism, ARM WTCHS FNGRS is a fresh producer from Glasgow who has challenged my surface-level vaporwave stereotyping (you know you do it, too) with a debut EP that fearlessly combines soothing nature sounds, ’80s metal guitar timbre, and erratic percussion into a peculiar new beast.
His entire debut EP, ☯ Essential Tremor ☯, is a frantic bout of sample-heavy psychedelia. Having had a bit of a ‘beatsmith rut’ over the past couple of weeks, ARM WTCHS FNGRS’ unabashed desire to throw a clusterfuck of samples in my face at warp speed is the mental reset that I need. With stunning album art from turn-of-the-millenium 3D extraordinaire, Globodigital Home Video, and a rather interpretative band name (witches? watches perhaps?), the unknown producer has already got me wondering what’s next.
“Cosmic Tips” has emerged as a personal favorite, not just for its playful hook but also for the seamless way in which the mysterious producer is able to make disparate sonic influences natural and fluid. Listen to it below and download the entire debut EP for free from ARM WTCHS FNGRS’ Bandcamp.
Here are some thoughts from ARM WTCHS FNGRS himself:
Well I’m 20, trying to write weirdo music that I’ve not heard before, I guess. I love bands like Tera Melos etc. Used to play in bands n really enjoyed it so I’m working on a live show with some other guys rite now. I really look up to local guys like Rustie and Hudson Mohawke for doing something really fresh, and hope I can achieve that in my lifetime.
“Cosmic Tips” are the names of extra long skins sold in Glasgow—they have a sweet packet and have ying yangs on n shit, really mystical.
