Music - (n.) The science or art of ordering tones or sounds in succession, in combination, and in temporal relationships to produce a composition having unity and continuity.
Most “temporal relationships” in music are pretty monogamous. The average pop song dedicates itself to one time signature and tempo, promising fidelity until its final silence. Sure, there are moments of flirtation, experiments with half or double time. Some songs may even engage in a tryst with some waltzy syncopated mistress in a bridge or an outro. But Celestial Shore‘s “Stairs Under Stars” throws any conventional relationship with meter out the window—it is, so to speak, a temporal orgy.
From jaunty bounces to fragmented collapses, it refuses to limit its fleeting, two and a half minute experience for the sake of some arbitrary musical morality. And yet, I am not turned off by such hedonism. It is not grimy or nihilistic, but rather, shamelessly joyous, and somehow, organized in its disorganization. Celestial Shore walk the tightrope of chaos with an ease and confidence that encourages you to join in, promising that no matter how crazy things get, we can all eventually pick up our clothes and walk back out into the world, smiling and guilt-free.
“Stairs Under Stars” is a song off of Celestial Shore’s upcoming album 10x, which will be released by Hometapes and Local Singles Records on September 3rd.
