There is a moment in “Advanced Falconry,” where the verse comes in about two minutes into the song. It’s a moment, not unlike the moment described in the song, that feels inherently romantic. There’s this tender breath right after a friend throws a rock into a quarry or after a first kiss that leaves you suspended in midair. These moments are like bubbles that pop so quickly after you discover them, with just the touch of your finger. And you want to hold them forever, but you can’t so you write a song about it.
Mutual Benefit’s Jordan Lee took it another step. He rebuilds the scene as best he can with his collaborators, creating scenery wagons with sprawling string arrangements and hearty harmonies. When you close your eyes, you can watch it play out. You see yourself, running through cornfields, catching the sunset in your hand, grasping for a moments that’s flying away.
“Advanced Falconry” is just a taste of Mutual Benefit’s upcoming full-length, Love’s Crushing Diamond. Be on the look out for more soon.
