Oakland producer Space Ghost has traveled a bit further from his initial orbit of heady hip-hop-heavy beats to a nearby planet filled with atmospheric synth expanses and garage-y clicks and clacks. Having had followed Space Ghost for a couple of years now, his newest EP, Patient Mind, is his most varied and realized work yet.
Namely, he’s gotten more fluid at forming sonic narratives, which complements his ever-improving ability to form compelling sound palates. The EP’s opener, “King City,” is a perfect example. It begins with an unassuming rough drone tone and is carried by hopeful emotions that arise from verbed-out bleakness.
Patient Mind is out today, self-released on Bandcamp. Be sure to check out his self-pressed CD’s of the album, it comes with an additional 30 songs unavailable anywhere else.
