Silk Screens is a behind the scenes look at the making of a track.
In this edition, Trevor Peterson aka Brooklyn, NY’s Gem Trails—also of Fire Talk Recs and Woodsman—discusses the making-of “Growing” from his forthcoming Dripps EP.
Without giving up too many secrets, I’ll say less is more. Piling a bunch of layers at different frequencies and tones can create the illusion of less. Basically the idea of this kind of Gem Trails track is to build and shape a dense sarcophagus of sound. Enough sound to lay down in, stretch out in, and maybe even fall asleep in.
The final thing ends up being a slow build, starting in the right speaker and bleeding left.
One by one, guitar tones bunk up. First the highs… then the mids…. then a little low end. A reference point might be the low flying guitar lean of Flying Saucer Attack…
…but schredded in a xerox.
Dropping in some deep drums to break up the insular cortex…
Finally the doors sort of unfold and the mini moog gets to bubble in, filter sweeping like a fiend.
A bunch of guitar pedals, some computer, and a brain… growing.
