For a band who, up until a couple of weeks ago, had literally no material to be sampled, SUNY Purchase kinda-sorta-supergroup Crying managed to build up a respectable following on their Facebook page based solely on word-of-mouth. Sure, a couple hundred likes might not be much to some, but when those clicks are banking purely on a name alone it’s pretty impressive. Featuring members of LVL UP and Whatever, Dad, Crying takes the fun, carefree nature of those projects, jams it together, sprinkles it with some 8-bit pixie dust, and cranks it up to 11. Initially their debut EP Get Olde was supposed to premiere on an undisclosed internet location sometime today, but the band and label decided to plop the free download online late last night to literally no fanfare. With a smirk and a tongue-in-cheek “fuk it,” Double Double Whammy set this candy-coated bit of sunshine free.
On “Vacation,” the EP’s longest track, the band tones down the hyperactive vibes in exchange for a bit of welcome restraint. Building the track around a perky chiptune melody that wouldn’t sound out of place on Kirby’s Adventure, the track is a fitting send off to summer. And just as we are bidding farewell to the warm weather, Elaiza similarly sings of leaving things behind.
And weak friends -
All the ones who hesitate to answer you unless it’s convenient
Bon voyage
Forget that olde worlde
I’m inching away from the darkest slump of my life
And I don’t know if I’m coming back
It’s a sad sort of goodbye, and Elaiza delivers it with half the energy we know she’s capable of. We can hear it in her voice. She’s tired of something. Maybe this girl needs a vacation.
Get Olde is available now in digital and vinyl format on September 17th via Double Double Whammy.
