Though switching genres is not always the best idea for producers who have become associated with a specific sound, Grown Folk‘s Druture releasing a hip-hop EP comes as a logical move. While cranking out house bangers with his buddy Brendan for labels like Icee Hot and Templar Sound, Dru’s musical background has actually been rooted in rap music since the very beginning. Grown Folk’s collaboration with Main Attrakionz was a first step towards a more outspoken hip-hop affiliation. Druture’s Out Of Towner EP is now taking things full-circle.

Featuring collaborations with the likes of Lil Bibby and Tink, Out Of Towner Vol. 1 is set to bear a strong Chicago influence, and the first leak, “Sosa(d)” serves as a testament to that. Like the gangsta reincarnation of Lana del Rey, London-based singer Little Cloud breezes hazily through a Chief Keef cover, which is about as indecipherable as the disorienting original. Druture’s production beds the vocals in a dramatic wash of ambient-hop that might make you tear up a little.
