The push-and-pull between orgiastic noise and organized form has become a major theme in today’s electronic music. Many producers appear to be toeing the line to extremes, trying to see how chaotic beat-based music can be while still remaining just that. On Sd Laika‘s track “Meshes,” the tension reaches its zenith. But in the midst of that tension, one feels the producer’s astounding sense of rhythmic control, like the tightening of reins upon a wild horse—or perhaps a wild horse mixed with a thundering locomotive.
