A change of heart isn’t the only thing TOPS are going through on their new single of the same name. When we previously left these bunch of elusive new-wavers back in 2012, their brand of shoegaze-tinged synth pop was firmly stuck in the ’80s, their melodies as haunting as they were glistening. Fast forward to now, though, and if “Change of Heart” is anything to go by, their eyes are beginning to pull up from their feet and more towards the disco ball on the ceiling.
The A-side to their new 7″ on Arbutus Records, “Change of Heart” sees TOPS embracing their cheesy pop sensibilities more than ever before—this is without a doubt their most infectious song to date. There are these brittle, fragile keys that dissipate like ice coolly melting in your cocktail over time, as well as a whimsical, airy vocal that’s oozing with romance, youth and nostalgia. TOPS sound far more self-assured with their sound here, and it paves the way for a potential new full-length record that could make for some dazzling summer evenings.
