Sometimes, the realm of the fat beat gets a little too mundane, a little too hackneyed. At first, this seems to be the case for Leaving Records artist D/P/I (a.k.a. DJ Purple Image), who, on the track “012,” dissects and deconstructs what could perhaps have been in its original form a Dilla or Madlib creation. Clearly, however, “012″ is not about original forms—it is about new ones, a sort of cubist answer to the traditionally painted musical landscape.
