“Drag,” Follies‘ first track on their split with Wishbone, opens in extreme contradiction. Its guitars plod along, as if dragged through mud. Yet they also sound inexplicably sharp, and as snare hits crack through the thickness, Phil Hartunian’s voice finds an easy resting place. The space in which he sings feels chiseled out of something much larger, and as the song continues to move Hartunian’s voice grows louder, growlier, and far more frantic. The space it occupies, however, always stays contained.
“Drag” is out now via Double Double Whammy.
