TYYNYT, the latest signing to the Finnish indie rock label Solina Records, is like the difference between a whiskey cocktail flavoured with cigar smoke and one without. “Pusuudelleen,” a new single from the project manned solely by prolific multi-instrumentalist Jari Oisalo, creeps into your ears with a synthesised crackle that tips its hat to Grandaddy’s Under the Western Freeway days. Oisalo’s knack for shaking up the shoegaze-tinged revivalist indie rock formula is impressive, as he then proceeds to channel the rough-and-ready riffs of Sebadoh and even a bit of Slowdive’s moodiness into the mix.
It’s a sensual, eerily elevating track that buries its hooks deep and refuses to let go, all the while emanating the kind of peacefulness you’d expect from floating in outer space. Quite appropriately, “tyynyt” means “pillows” in Finnish, and the fluffy qualities of “Pusuudelleen” certainly make great music for late night escapism. Those seeking fresher takes in the already oversaturated ’90s impressionist market will find something genuine and surprising in Oisalo’s work here, and an equally exciting full-length is set to follow in 2015.
