Hannah Diamond - “Every Night”

The PC Music pop star’s new single is a joyful throwback to the turn of the millennium.

There’s a really great screenshot going around the internet lately of two preteen lovers articulating their unabashed love for one another in the unique way that only awkward 10-year-olds can: “the only person i love is u” “same” “thanks” “yep.” It’s hilarious and a little uncomfortable, which is also a great way to describe PC Music frontwoman Hannah Diamond‘s third single “Every Night.”

There are few surprises here for the familiar. Twinkling bells, helium-saturated vocals, and an tepid EDM-esque beat set the tone, and Hannah’s lyrics are superficially vapid: “I like the way you like that I like how you look.” Feeble lyrics aren’t a negative here, though, you can practically hear her hair twirling around her fingers with every “like, um.”

What I’m getting at is: we’re talking about a record label that has committed itself to a warped emulation of everything from new jack swing to Japanese dancehall. So Hannah’s classic iPod earbuds, the giant “iTUNES” emblazoned on the song’s website, and the $1.29 price tag (PC Music’s first time charging a price for their music) can’t be a coincidence. We’ve hit full 2002.
