In all of Kelly Lee Owens‘ press photos—in all the ones that I’ve seen, at least—the musician is giving a look as if she knows exactly what she’s doing. And when you hear her music, that look certainly makes sense. On “Uncertain,” a slow and booming arpeggiated bass ushers her wandering vocals forward with a firm yet friendly push. The music only stops its gentle flowing pace for small, dynamic explosions in phrasing, reminiscent of Björk’s work. But Kelly Lee Owens is not Björk. She’s something else entirely singular and unique—another message that her consistent gaze seems to convey.
