For a few weeks I’ve had an unknown song ripped from a SoundCloud mix in my phone titled “omg what is this.” I’ve been playing it on loop every day in my car on the drive home with the windows down, letting the bass kicks push away the blistering heat.
Turns out it was a preview of “Kid U” by Tarquin. The London-based producer’s new single is seeing a release next week on currently-on-fire label Gobstopper Records. “Kid U” is the sort of future grime sound that lies somewhere between the street-hardened pulse of Mssingno and the candy floss bounce of PC Music, the plucking keys and pitched up vocals literally hopping and skipping around cartoonish sound effects that fill in the percussion.
